A Bright, Coastal-Inspired Transformation

When writer and blogger Natalie Thomas transformed her family room into a brighter, happier living space, she needed the right piece of art to complete her California-cool vibe. Read on to learn more about Natalie's living room transformation and how Hapi Art became the finishing piece for her blank wall.

Q: Tell me a little about your space and how you connected with Kristi?
A: When we moved in, the living room was very dark. Small windows, navy walls, heavy drapes, leopard print carpeting... I wanted a bright, colorful, California-inspired space. So we broke down bookcases, put in new, longer windows and painted the entire room white. I wanted our art to reflect our new room, but I couldn’t find anything I liked or that fit until I stumbled on Grace in the Crumbs‘ post with a fun piece in the background of one of her photos. I immediately reached out to ask whose it was. And that’s when I discovered Kristi Kohut of Hapi Art. I’m now obsessed with her pieces. They make me, well, happy and go perfectly with the bright, colorful, California vibe of our home.

Q: I love that the readers of your blog had the opportunity to weigh in and share their opinion on how you decorated your home...and in this case your Living Room. Tell me more about that!
A: I started my blog, originally titled Nat's Next Adventure, as a choose my own adventure blog. Readers weighed in on everything from what vacation I took, party I planned and how I decorated my home. When I moved into our house four years ago, I took them along on the adventure and they helped me choose everything from fabric for window seats and throw pillows to the tile on our fireplace. My site is now nataliethomasfriedman.com, but I still cover a lot of home decor (as well as consult for others, helping them decorate their homes @nnaliving) and have my followers vote on Instagram.

Q: What was the process of choosing art like for you? Did you have any fears? I know people can feel overwhelmed, especially with what size to choose and if the piece will work in their space.
A: I'll leave a wall blank for awhile before I choose a piece. I want something that I love and that speaks to me. There's been a bit of trial when it comes to art for my space, but I have fun with it. I was less fearful or overwhelmed, just more indecisive and procrastinated. :)

Q: How do the actual pieces compare to just seeing them online?
A: They're even better! Ours makes such a statement and I love the acrylic frame- it's such a fresh, modern touch that elevates the piece.

Q: Your goal with this room was to create a bright, colorful space and it's clear to see you did just that! How does it feel to have your living room complete and have Kristi's art in your home?
A: It feels amazing. It's the happiest space in our home, which is good because we spend a lot of time there. And Kristi's art is a huge component of that. We get so many compliments on the room and the art and I've actually booked several home decor clients based on that room alone!
